 Mold and Insect Resistance

Mold

A frequent argument against using cellulose insulation is the myth that it is more prone to mold than other insulation materials. This is simply not true.

FTI’s cellulose insulation is specially treated with Board Defense to make it mold and mildew resistant. This additive meets and exceeds the required ASTM C-739-05b test.

As humidity rises, moisture is created. Unlike other insulation materials, the organic nature of cellulose insulation means that this moisture is suspended as a vapor. Due to a natural capillary action, any vapor will pass freely out of the insulation as the humidity drops. Other insulating materials, which lack this natural capillary action, can cause this vapor to condense into liquid form and pose a serious rot or mold issue if sufficient water is present.

Insect Resistance

InCide® Pest Control (PC) cellulose insulation is formulated with Zone Defense. This borate fire retardant also acts as a desiccant which dehydrates insects that come in contact with it. When InCide PC (EPA Reg. No. 44757-4-59737 and Est. No. 59737-MO-001) is ingested by pests, it also effectively kills the microorganisms within the pest’s digestive tract. This dual mechanism of action effectively kills insects upon contact. InCide PC protects against the following insects:

  • Drywood Termites
  • Subterranean Termites
  • Centipedes
  • Booklice
  • Silverfish
  • Cockroaches
  • Millipedes
  • Grain Weevils
  • Ants
  • Crickets
  • Sowbugs
  • Earwigs
