Mold Resistance
A frequent argument against using cellulose insulation is the myth that it is more prone to mold than other insulation materials. This is simply not true.
As humidity rises, moisture is created. Unlike other insulation materials, the organic nature of cellulose insulation means that this moisture is suspended as a vapor. Due to a natural capillary action, any vapor will pass freely out of the insulation as the humidity drops. Other insulating materials, which lack this natural capillary action, can cause this vapor to condense into liquid form and pose a serious rot or mold issue if sufficient water is present.
The basic fungus standard by which all cellulose insulation must pass is ASTM C-739-05b. FTI cellulose goes above and beyond this basic requirement. All FTI cellulose insulation products are treated with Board Defense, a fungistatic agent, to protect the product from fungal, mold and mildew growth. FTI is one of a select few cellulose insulation manufacturers in the country that can make this claim.
